Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley and his office recently chastised Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi for proposing to remove the cap on state and local tax deductions for the next coronavirus bill.
In 2017, President Trump put a SALT cap limiting the deductions of state and local tax from the federal taxes. While the cap has been unpopular in the high-tax blue states, Grassley’s office states that removing the cap will not benefit the working class.
Pelosi stated that removing the cap would give Americans “more disposable income, which is the lifeblood of our economy, a consumer economy that we are.”
Grassley’s offices stated, “This is a nonstarter. Millionaires don’t need a new tax break as the federal government spends trillions of dollars to fight a pandemic.”
House Democrats have wanted to remove the cap before, and now with the crisis going on, it seems like they are willing to take advantage of it to further their agendas.
