In a statement by Chief Justice John Roberts, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was missing from oral arguments at the Supreme Court Wednesday because of a “stomach bug.”
Ginsburg is “indisposed due to illness,” said Roberts at the beginning of the hearing.
The wellbeing of the 86-year-old liberal activist, recognized as “the notorious RBG,” has become a subject of a lot of public attention over the past year, starting with a fall that fractured three of her ribs last November. She later underwent surgery on her lung and then pancreatic cancer radiation treatment.
In reaction to these clinical events, liberal activists have alternated between cultic devotion — trying to offer their healthy organs as a means of keeping Ginsburg alive until Trump retires — and disappointment that the justice has not retired, allowing President Barack Obama the chance to appoint a younger successor.
Ginsburg told an audience at the National Book Festival in Washington, DC, following her new round of cancer treatments, “I am on my way to being very well.”
“I love my job,” she continued. “It’s the best and the hardest job I’ve ever had. It has kept me going through four cancer bouts. Instead of concentrating on my aches and pains, I just know that I have to read this set of briefs.
